There’s a campaign to crowdsource a jailbreak of Apple’s iOS 7. It’s called the Device Freedom Prize and there’s several different justifications for it. Partly it’s that some think that, having paid $600 or more for an iPhone, that people should be able to load onto it whatever software they darn well like. There’s also a concern that Apple's AAPL -1.1% App Store isn’t all that friendly to certain of the apps that make it easier for the disabled to use their iPhones. And finally, yes, of course, there’s a legal complication over the matter.

Read more...We strongly believe that users should have the freedom to control their devices. We wanted an open source jailbreak for iOS 7, giving users the capability to install what they want on their own devices and the ability to audit the code they’re using to do so. Jailbreaking is also critical to ensuring that the disabled are able to use their mobile devices as easily as possible. So we started a prize for the first people who can do it.
