Tipped to land in March, iOS 7.1 is now here and it brings with it quite a few changes and new additions to Apple’s jazzy new-look mobile platform. There are new Siri capabilities, CarPlay-support and a multitude of UX tweaks. We’ve been tinkering with it since it landed last night. Here’s some initial impressions.

iOS 7.1 features a slew of changes. Some are visual, some are under the hood, and some are completely new features. But before I delve into all the little details the first thing I want to talk about is speed. Everything I do now in iOS 7.1, from unlocking the lock screen to launching apps to accessing Control Center to multitasking is probably 10-15% snappier than it was before.
iOS 7.1 also greatly improves the general performance of the iPhone 4, giving users at the bottom of Apple’s ecosystem at least another six-months or so out of their frankly ancient handsets. The big uplift in speed – or, at least, the feeling of speed – is to do with Apple slashing the duration of iOS’s animations. They’re now much shorter, less intrusive and look and feel much better; even on older hardware like the iPhone 4 and iPad 2.
